The Port de Sóller and the Barrio de Santa Catalina

What can Sóller offer you

The Port de Sóller, located about two kilometers from Sóller, is the largest natural port on the north coast of Mallorca and throughout history has served as shelter for fishermen, merchants and all types of sailors.

The history of Port de Sóller, together with the citrus trade since the fourteenth century, during the eighteenth century saw the time of more economic and commercial splendor for the export of local products. In the nineteenth century, it was the strategic point between Mallorca and the continent where merchant ships and passenger ships landed, transporting the numerous Mallorcan emigrants in search for a better future.

To the right of the Port de Sóller we find the Barrio de Santa Catalina where the fishermen of the port used to live and kept their boats. With the typical appearance of a seafaring population, with small sheds located on very steep cobbled streets and named for winds, Santa Catalina is the perfect place to walk and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the neighborhood.

The steep streets of the neighborhood lead up to the hill of Port de Sóller where we find the Oratorio de Santa Catalina, dated from the 13th century and rebuilt in 1550, and its viewpoint, an ideal place to enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. At the end of the hill we also find the Lighthouse of Sa Creu, built in 1864.

Although formerly the fishermen of the Barrio de Santa Catalina kept their boats where the pedestrian promenade of Calle de la Marina is now located, currently fishing and recreational vessels are moored to the marina of Port de Sóller located just in front of Santa Catalina.
