The cemetery of Son Sang de Sóller is like a garden, full of plants and flowers, with statues made by renowned artists and with great plastic value.
It constitutes an authentic museum of funerary sculpture of modernist style with an important symbolic repertoire. The grounds were blessed in 1814 but it was not used systematically until 1841. Located on a hill, from where you can see a privileged view of Sóller, it's considered one of the most beautiful and enigmatic cemeteries in Mallorca. It's a place that inspires a lot of romanticism and reminds of the typical beautiful European cemetery where people walk through its corridors and walk among the graves.
Inside the enclosure we find a considerable repertoire of tombs, pantheons and funerary monuments, of various typologies, among which we can highlight sets of modernist style with floral details, symbols and enigmatic figures that give an air of mystery to the entire funerary ensemble. The modernist aesthetic of the cemetery reflects the idea of total art in which modernist artists aspired.
The inscriptions of the graves in Catalan, Spanish and French are witnesses of the migratory movements that the town lived since the end of the 19th century, in addition to the desire of the people of Sóller to return to the land where they were born for their eternal rest.
The original core of the cemetery went under three extensions in 1894, in 1913 and 1989 respectively, clearly identifiable by the different levels at which the cemetery is distributed.
