After a brief tour of the surroundings of the Port de Sóller, we arrive at sa Torre Picada an old defensive tower built between 1614 and 1622 to defend Sóller and the Port de Sóller from privateer attacks such as the one that the town suffered on May 11, 1561.
Its walls of 3 meters wide and 11 high gave refuge to the 3 guards who inhabited it and were responsible for monitoring the waters and warn of any approaching threat at the Port de Sóller by signs of fire or smoke, depending on whether it was day or night. For the entire Sierra de Tramuntana we find other defensive towers and watchtowers with the same purpose that worked together to warn the city and all the villages of pirate attacks and other threats from the sea.
Sa Torre Picada was active until the 19th century in order to monitor the contraband and also during the Spanish Civil War watching if planes were approaching from the Iberian Peninsula.
Visiting Sa Torre Picada not only allows you to know a part of the history of Sóller but also to enjoy beautiful views of the Port de Sóller, the Sierra de Tramuntana and the Mediterranean Sea.
