La Torre Picada

What can Sóller offer you
scroll down

After a short tour around the Port de Sóller, we arrive at the Torre Picada an ancient defensive tower built between 1614 and 1622 to defend Sóller and the Port de Sóller from corsair attacks such as the one suffered by the town on May 11, 1561 .

Its 3 meter wide and 11-meter walls sheltered the 3 vigilantes that inhabited it and that were in charge of monitoring the waters and warning of any threat that the Port de Sóller would approach by signs of fire or smoke, depending on whether it was day or night. For all the Sierra de Tramuntana we found other defensive towers and tunnels with the same purpose and that worked together to warn the city and all the people of the pirate attacks and other threats of the sea.

The Picada Tower was active until the nineteenth century in order to monitor the extras and also during the Spanish Civil War watching over if planes came from the Iberian Peninsula.

Visiting the Picada Tower not only allows you to know a part of the history of Sóller but also enjoy beautiful views of the Port de Sóller, the Sierra de Tramuntana and the Mediterranean Sea.
