Biniaraix

What can Sóller offer you
scroll down

In the shadow of Barranco de Biniaraix, we find a village of the same name that belongs to two municipalities, Sóller and Fornalutx. With green landscapes all year round and a singular beauty, Biniaraix is known throughout the island as a quiet town linked to the production of oranges.

Located 2 kilometers from Sóller in the foothills of the mountains of our valley, Biniaraix is located at a considerable height which gives it the charm of a mountain village of the Sierra de Tramuntana: stone huts, narrow alleys and with pronounced coasts... Everything in Biniaraix contributes to create its unique beauty that turns its landscapes into idyllic.

The historical complex that forms the urban nucleus of Biniaraix and its church are declared of Cultural Interest by the Insular Council of Mallorca, this was built at the end of the 16th century and has a bell tower with white tile coverage. Also noteworthy are the houses of the possession of  Cas Don and Can Ribera houses and the old public pools.

Traditionally, the main activity of the area was agriculture, with crops of orchard, vine and olive tree, provided with abundant water by the torrent of small waterfalls that runs to the bottom of the Biniaraix Ravine. Its agriculture lived an expansive period in the 19th century thanks to the increase in citrus production. Like Sóller, Biniaraix saw his sons emigrate to European cities, especially in southern France, where they set up fruit shops.

From Biniaraix there is a stone path that, through the Biniaraix ravine, led to the Lluc sanctuary. You need to be in good physical shape to ascend the 1,932 steps of the endless stairs that connect the village with Cases de l'Ofre, a vast possession of the Muslim period located an hour's walk from Biniaraix. During several sections of the climb up the cobblestone stairs we can see the Puig de L'Ofre (1,091), peak perfectly conical, like a volcano.
